Dark Brown Thick Wooly Felted Fleece rug - ' Tourdu' - Cumbrian flock
This is a beautiful “Felt Backed Fleece” wool rug.
A cruelty free, chemical free alternative to a sheepskin, where the sheep remians happy in the field and just receives a haircut!!
Collected from two lovely shepardesses i met from Cumbria , with a passion like me for all things wool.
To make these rugs I wet felt the back of the Fleece using British Gotland wool to create a soft pure wool backing that keeps the wool in its natural form and shape.
Using only water, natural soap and alot of muscle!!
During the felting process the fleece is washed and then again in a soapy bath multiple times , and then brushed carefully.
This is a wonderful alternative to a sheepskin as there is no killing, no horrible chemicals used in the tanning of the skin process and it can be washed.
Each fleece is unique in its colour and irregular in its shape.
This thick ‘Toudu’ Fleece from a flock in Cumbria, Uk.
Not the softest but definitely very dense.
with a staple length ( fiber length) so fluffy thickness of 3.5 inches! so warm and wooly!
Measurements
At its largest point
Length - 98 cm/38 inches
Width - 71 cm /28 inch
Each rug is cleaned well multiple times in very hot water and soap, then brushed and picked out.
I cannot guarantee 100% that there will not be any tiny pieces of plant matter , but it would be tiny if there is any.
I always covered my sheep fleece with a fine muslin if I was putting tiny babies naked on to the fleece.
But i can guarantee that there are no chemicals used, unlike most sheepskins that are tanned and bleached in awful chemicals to get that super clean look.
For many people, sheepskin can be considered hypoallergenic. Its natural wool fibres are breathable and moisture-wicking, which helps prevent the build-up of dust mites, mould, and bacteria — all common triggers for allergies.
Sheepskin also contains lanolin, a naturally occurring substance that can help soothe the skin and deter irritants. Its gentle, soft texture makes it a popular choice for nurseries, children’s rooms, and cosy corners where comfort really counts.
As always, if you or your little ones have specific allergies or sensitivities, it’s a good idea to check with a healthcare professional. But for most households, sheepskin offers a snug and safe way to add natural warmth and softness to your space.
The dense wool fibres naturally repel dust mites and inhibit the growth of bacteria and mould—two common allergy triggers. Plus, the lanolin (a natural oil in wool) has antimicrobial properties that help keep the skin-friendly vibes flowing.
Unlike synthetic rugs or throws, which can trap dust and irritants, sheepskin’s open fibre structure breathes easily, reducing moisture and preventing the build-up of allergens. That means it’s less likely to provoke sneezes or itchy eyes.
Tips for allergy sufferers using sheepskin.
Regularly shake and gently vacuum your sheepskin (using the hose nozzle, not the brush) to keep it fresh.
Breathable wool fibres help regulate temperature, making it feel snug in winter and fresh in summer — perfect for year-round use. Thanks to its soft, fluffy texture and natural charm, sheep fleece is a welcome addition to all kinds of spaces, from calm corners to busy family rooms.
While individual sensitivities can vary, most people find sheep wool to be a gentle and comforting option that’s easy to love.
